Battletech - Draconis Combine

Izanagi Warriors, also known as 'Dragon's Claws', were founded by Takashi Kurita as an bodyguard unit loyal to him personally.

This was done to safeguard against the possibility of a coup against him. 

It was initially formed from retired veterans.

Formation
Originally formed by Takashi Kurita as a secret bodyguard against potential betrayal by his son Theodore. It was initially made up with retired veterans.  These veterans swore an oath of loyalty to Takashi Kurita. When he died, the Warriors underwent a crisis of faith until Theodore offered to put them on the DCMS rolls as part of the Coordinator's personal bodyguard. 

Clan Invasion

Battle of Luthien (3052)
The Dragon's Claws fought in the 3052 Battle of Luthien. At the end of this conflict, the unit was renamed the Izanagi Warriors, and placed on the official DCMS roster.
When Hohiro Kurita's life was endangered on Teniente, Takashi Kurita urged his son Theodore to give the Izanagi Warriors to Shin Yodama to rescue Hohiro.

After an attempt on the Coordinator's life by elements of the Black Dragon Society, the Otomo's ranks were purged. This saw the influence and responsibility assigned to the Izanagi Warriors rise. 

Operation Bulldog
In 3059, the Warriors were deployed to take the Clan Nova Cat worlds of Teniente and Juazeiro under the command of Shin Yodama. They undertook simple token Trials of Possession for these worlds, essentially absorbing the Nova Cats into the new SLDF. Teniente and Juazeiro were absorbed this way.  They aggressively attacked the Clan Smoke Jaguar's occupied world of Outer Volta along with the 8th Sword of Light and the 39th Division of the ComGuards.  They destroyed the First Jaguar Guards in a series of fights.  After Bulldog was complete, they returned to Luthien to resume their protection of the Coordinator. 

Jihad

Battle of Luthien (3067-3074)

In December 3067, forces loyal to the Black Dragon Society invaded Luthien, in the beginning of the Jihad's Battle of Luthien. On New Year's Day, 3068, the Kokuryo-kai 2nd Sword of Light surrounded and then attacked the Imperial Palace. The Izanagi Warriors and their fellow samurai Otomo fought a delaying action while the Loyalist 3rd Luthien Guards retreated, taking heavy casualties. 

The coup devastated both the Izanagi Warriors and the Otomo. The two units' survivors joined the 1st Genyosha in fighting the traitors, operating under the control of Sho-sho Sajori Mitsotisa. They performed as raiders, noted for their precision and later salvage operations.

On 23 August 3072, the joint unit - in a concerted effort alongside the Xi Galaxy of Clan Nova Cat - assaulted a large Blakist supply base defended by the Forty-second Shadow Division, in the Battle of the Kyoto Zen Arcology Project. The DCMS flanking attack was intended to sow confusion within the Blakist defenses, and though deflected, did just that. A Star was able to breach the rear of the base and set off an enormous chemical explosion, resulting in the destruction of multiple units on both sides and a significant loss to the Blakist ammunition supply. 

On March 14th 3074, the Word of Blake ROM had leaked information regarding the presence of Buda Weapons Chief Researcher Hideoshi Yamika and his prototype Large X-Pulse Laser to the Kokuryu-kai as a means of wearing down Loyalist defenders in Skytower City.  The resulting battle ended with Yamika and his prototypes being hustled aboard a Blakist DropShip. 

After the liberation of Luthien in December 3074, the unit was scheduled to be rebuilt around the survivors.

Republic Era

After the Jihad ended, Hohiro Kurita found a new purpose for the Izanagi Warriors. By hand-selecting warriors who had shown unswerving loyalty to the Combine, the Coordinator used the posting as a living award, equivalent to the honor shown a Knight of New Samarkand. The rebuilding Izanagi Warriors were based on New Samarkand in 3079. 

The Coordinator uses the Izanagi Warriors as a parallel regiment for the Otomo. Where the Otomo uses the ISF to investigate candidates, the Izanagi Warriors rely on the Order of Five Pillars to investigate their potential recruits. Like the Otomo the Izanagi Warriors are rebuilding slowly and for much the same reason: They do not wish to strip the line regiments of their elite warriors.
